Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) is pushing further beyond its core lodging model, introducing private airport pickup services across 125 cities in Asia, Europe, and Latin America, including Paris, Bali, and Mexico City, as it continues building out a more integrated travel ecosystem. The service, launched through a partnership with UK-based Welcome Pickups, appears directly inside the Airbnb app after a stay is booked, allowing users to schedule rides to their accommodations and, in some cases, request meet-and-greet services at arrival. The expansion could signal Airbnb's ongoing effort to replicate the end-to-end convenience traditionally associated with hotels, while still operating within its asset-light marketplace structure.
The rollout sits within Airbnb's broader Services initiative, which already allows travelers to book add-ons such as private chefs, massages, fitness sessions, and beauty treatments. Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky has indicated that Services, alongside the Experiences segment, could contribute $1 billion or more in annual revenue over time, though he has cautioned that it may take years before these newer offerings become a material driver of the business. The airport transfer feature also formalizes what had previously been a fragmented setup, where some hosts independently offered Welcome Pickups through referral links or discounts outside the platform.
Under the new structure, guests can arrange and adjust rides directly within the Airbnb app without paying an additional Airbnb fee, while Welcome Pickups manages pricing and customer support. Fares are fixed based on factors such as vehicle type and luggage needs, and users receive driver contact details in advance to coordinate logistics. Airbnb said an earlier pilot saw thousands of bookings across Europe and Asia, which could point to early demand as the company continues expanding adjacent services, including a separate grocery delivery test with Instacart in select US markets.
